The composition begins with Japanese woodcut printing, capturing the natural grain, knots, and markings of wood before shapes are carefully cut out and reassembled into a balanced, sculptural arrangement. The result is a layered study of form and material that echoes Mentsen's Offcut Mobiles, sculptural works crafted entirely from reclaimed wood scraps.

Founded in 2011, Mentsen is a partnership between Japanese designers Yasuyuki Sakurai and Risa Sano, working at the intersection of craft and industrial design. Their studio name, meaning "lines and surfaces" in Japanese, reflects a practice that spans furniture, product design, and one-off handmade objects. Cut Shapes 04 translates this sensibility into a flat work, transforming the imperfections of timber — its cracks, colouring, and knots — into a considered visual composition.

Each print is produced as a gallery-grade 12-colour Giclée fine art print on FSC-certified, 265g acid-free paper, made to order in Denmark to minimise waste and ensure consistent quality. Cut Shapes 04 is available in four sizes — 30x30 cm, 50x50 cm, 70x70 cm, and 100x100 cm — allowing it to suit anything from an intimate gallery wall to a bold, statement-making display.

A thoughtful addition for those drawn to materiality and craft, Cut Shapes 04 brings the tactile warmth of wood into print form, grounded in Mentsen's distinctive design philosophy.
