Conceived for an exhibition of his work at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney, the original lounge drew immediate attention and was subsequently acquired by the Gallery of South Australia.

Newson's concept was only "remotely, very remotely" based on the chaise longue in Jacques-Louis David's 1800 portrait of Madame Récamier. His starting point was a flowing form in aluminium. The body was shaped from a single piece of foam, in exactly the same way a surfboard is made. The only way to attach the aluminium sheet was to hammer small metal pieces flat with a mallet and fix them with blind rivets. The result evoked the look of aircraft cladding, which inspired the name Lockheed Lounge.

This miniature captures the sculptural curves and the distinctive riveted metal surface of the full-size icon. It is crafted from glass-fibre reinforced plastic, rubber and aluminium sheet, bringing a touch of 1980s design history into a compact format.

Part of the Vitra Miniatures Collection, which reproduces landmark furniture designs with remarkable attention to detail, the Lockheed Lounge makes a striking display piece for collectors, design enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates sculptural form. Place it on a shelf, sideboard or desk and enjoy a small-scale tribute to a modern classic.

Scale: 1:6.
