Designed by French duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in 2008, the original Vegetal set out to create an organically formed chair that looks as though it simply grew, inspired by small trees that American gardeners once trained into the shape of seating.

Each miniature is produced at a scale of 1:6 and captures the complex, asymmetrical structure of the full-size model, with its branch-like struts forming the seat shell. The interplay of this intricate form and the colouring makes the natural inspiration unmistakable. The set is available in two colours, Brick and Cactus, and the miniatures are made from through-dyed polyamide.

The story behind the design is as compelling as its appearance. The chair was conceived for outdoor use, which meant it had to be weatherproof and, for practical reasons, stackable. Neither the Bouroullecs nor Vitra anticipated that realising this demanding brief would take four years of intensive design and development work. The full-size chair is injection-moulded from polyamide, pushing the limits of the material and of contemporary production technology. It has been manufactured by Vitra AG in Basel, Switzerland, since 2008.

A set of three Vegetal miniatures makes a thoughtful addition to a design lover's shelf or display cabinet, and a fitting gift for anyone who admires the intersection of nature, craftsmanship and industrial innovation.
