George Sowden, born in Leeds and based in Milan since 1970, was one of the founders of the Memphis group in 1981 and runs his own design studio, Sowden. His lamps are made of silicone, a soft, non-toxic material that diffuses light evenly and keeps its colour over time. The range covers rechargeable portable lamps with Sowden's own LED disc, silicone shades for E27 pendants, plug-in table and floor lamps, and a small family of objects: clocks, mills, tins and posters, all in the studio's playful colour combinations.
Sowden is the Milan design studio of George Sowden, a founding member of the Memphis group. The collection is built around silicone: the Dual Functionality portable lamps PL1 to PL6 and TL7 run on USB power or their own rechargeable batteries, the CL1 to CL5 shades hang from any E27 fitting, and the TL2, TL4 table lamps and FL4 floor lamp plug in with a bulb of your choice. Alongside the lighting sit a wall clock, pepper and salt mills, tin boxes and graphic posters, all in Sowden's bold colour blocking.
